Caffeine Half-Life: How Long Does Caffeine Stay in Your System?

The short answer: caffeine does not disappear when you stop feeling the initial lift. In healthy adults, caffeine is commonly described as having an average half-life of roughly about five hours, but the real range varies substantially. A half-life means that about half of the caffeine is still in the body after that period — not that the effect suddenly ends.
What does caffeine half-life mean?
A drug’s half-life is the time it takes for the amount in the body to fall by roughly half. If someone consumes 100mg caffeine and their effective half-life is five hours, a simplified example would look like this:

This is an illustration, not a prediction for an individual. Absorption, distribution and elimination are more complex than a simple countdown.
Why “five hours” is only an average
Caffeine clearance varies because of genetics, habitual intake, pregnancy, smoking status, liver metabolism, age and some medications. That is why two people can drink the same coffee at the same time and have very different sleep experiences later.
The FDA explicitly notes wide variation in both caffeine sensitivity and how quickly people eliminate it from the body.
How long do the noticeable effects last?
The subjective “kick” and the pharmacological half-life are not the same thing. You may stop feeling a strong alerting effect while caffeine is still present at meaningful levels.
That helps explain why someone can say “caffeine doesn’t affect me at night” yet still have sleep that is shorter or less restorative than expected.
Does caffeine gum have a different half-life?
Once caffeine has entered the bloodstream, the body is dealing with the same caffeine molecule regardless of whether it came from coffee, gum or a capsule. The gum format can change how quickly caffeine is released and absorbed; it does not create a fundamentally different elimination half-life.

Why half-life matters for sleep
A dose taken in the afternoon can still leave caffeine in the body at bedtime. EFSA notes that even a 100mg single dose may affect sleep in some adults when consumed close to bedtime. A controlled study by Drake and colleagues found 400mg caffeine disrupted sleep even when taken six hours before bedtime.
That 400mg study used a large dose, so it should not be interpreted as proof that every smaller dose disrupts sleep six hours later. It does show why timing and dose need to be considered together.
