Caffeine + L-Theanine: The Science Behind Calm, Focused Energy

The short answer: caffeine and L-theanine have been studied together in randomized trials for attention, reaction time and subjective alertness. Some studies find the combination produces a different cognitive or subjective profile than caffeine alone. The evidence supports saying the pairing may support attention and alertness; it does not support promising that L-theanine eliminates jitters or guarantees a “calm” feeling for everyone.
What is L-theanine?
L-theanine is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves. Unlike caffeine, it is not a stimulant. Researchers have studied it on its own and alongside caffeine because tea naturally contains both compounds and because the pairing may influence attention, mood and the way caffeine feels.
Why pair L-theanine with caffeine?
Caffeine is well established as an alertness-promoting stimulant. It primarily works by blocking adenosine receptors, temporarily reducing the signalling associated with sleep pressure. L-theanine acts through different pathways and has been studied for effects on brain activity, attention and subjective state.
When the two are consumed together, researchers are not simply adding “energy” to “relaxation”. They are testing whether two different compounds produce a useful combined profile for tasks that require attention without assuming that one cancels the other.
What the randomized trials show
One of the best-known trials is Haskell et al. (2008), a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study. The researchers tested L-theanine, caffeine, the combination and placebo. Caffeine improved several attention measures. The combination also improved measures including reaction time, working-memory response speed and sentence verification, while ratings of tiredness were reduced and alertness increased.
Other controlled studies have also reported effects on attention switching, accuracy and subjective alertness. A 2021 systematic review concluded that the most consistent findings for the combination were in attention-related outcomes during the first one to two hours after intake, while also noting that the evidence base is relatively small and uses different doses and testing methods.
What the research does not prove
There are several claims worth avoiding:
- “L-theanine prevents caffeine jitters.” The combination may alter subjective effects, but it does not guarantee zero jitters.
- “The combination is clinically proven to treat anxiety or ADHD.” Nutrition studies of attention do not make the pairing a medical treatment.
- “More L-theanine is always better.” Trials use a range of doses and ratios; there is no single universally established ideal ratio.
- “Everyone feels calm.” Caffeine sensitivity, sleep, habitual intake and genetics influence the experience.
Does the caffeine-to-theanine ratio matter?
Research has used multiple ratios. Haskell et al. studied 150mg caffeine with 250mg L-theanine, while other trials have used different combinations, including lower caffeine doses. That makes it inappropriate to say science has established one exact “best” ratio.

Why delivery format still matters
The caffeine-and-theanine story is separate from the question of how quickly caffeine is delivered. L-theanine does not change the need to track caffeine. The FDA cites 400mg per day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects for most adults, while noting substantial person-to-person variation. EFSA identifies single doses up to 200mg and daily intakes up to 400mg as levels that generally do not raise safety concerns for healthy adults.
