What Is the Best Caffeine Dose for Focus? What Research Actually Supports

What the 2025 attention meta-analysis found
Kløve and Petersen included 31 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials with 1,455 participants. Caffeine improved both attention accuracy and reaction time overall.
Higher doses of at least 200mg showed larger effects in subgroup analyses, but the dose-response pattern was not simply “more is always better”. Reaction time continued to improve with dose, while accuracy followed a quadratic pattern — improving up to a point before declining.
Why that does not mean you should take 200mg+
A research effect size is not the same as a consumer recommendation. Higher doses also raise the likelihood of anxiety, jitters, palpitations and sleep disruption. If 40–80mg gives you useful alertness, taking 200mg simply because a meta-analysis found stronger average reaction-time effects is not automatically a better trade.
Low doses can still have cognitive effects
A broad 2016 review reported improvements in alertness, vigilance, attention and reaction time across low-to-moderate caffeine doses, including doses around 40mg in the literature it reviewed.
