Caffeine for Night Shift Work: Alertness, Timing and Sleep

The short answer: caffeine can improve vigilance and reaction time in fatigued shift workers, but the trade-off is sleep. Why night shifts are biologically difficult

Working at night places wakefulness against the body’s usual circadian signals. Even a motivated, experienced worker can become sleepy because the problem is biological, not simply a lack of discipline.

Caffeine can temporarily support alertness, but it does not fully correct circadian misalignment or sleep debt.

What the shift-worker evidence shows

A systematic review and meta-analysis by Temple and colleagues examined caffeine in fatigued shift workers. In the included studies, caffeine improved psychomotor vigilance in several settings, reduced lapses and lessened reaction-time slowing toward the end of shifts.

The same review also found a downside: some studies reported reduced sleep quality and sleep duration after caffeine.

That trade-off should shape how caffeine is used during night work.

Use caffeine earlier rather than at the end of the shift

If you finish a night shift and plan to sleep soon afterwards, a large caffeine dose near clock-off can still be active when you get into bed. Caffeine’s average half-life is commonly around five hours, with wide person-to-person variation.
