Does Chewing Gum Help You Focus? What the Research Says

The short answer: chewing gum itself has been associated with higher subjective alertness and, in some studies, better sustained-attention performance. The findings are not perfectly consistent, and the mechanism is still debated. When the gum also contains caffeine, there are potentially two separate influences: the act of chewing and the established stimulant effect of caffeine.
Chewing alone may affect alertness
Studies comparing ordinary chewing gum with no gum often report higher subjective alertness during chewing. Attention findings are more variable, but several experiments have found benefits in sustained-attention or vigilance tasks.
A 2015 review of studies examining chewing and attention found positive attention-related findings in more than half of the included reports, while also noting mixed and negative findings. That is a useful summary: the signal is interesting, but chewing gum is not a guaranteed cognitive enhancer.
What a sustained-attention study found
Johnson and colleagues had participants complete a sustained-attention task with and without chewing gum. Chewing was associated with better task performance and higher subjective alertness.
Another study by Allen and Smith found chewing reliably increased reported alertness, while effects on individual attention tasks changed with time-on-task.
Why might chewing affect attention?
Several explanations have been proposed, including increased arousal, changes in cerebral blood flow, motor activity and the simple sensory stimulation of chewing. None has been established as the single definitive mechanism.
That uncertainty is why it is better to say “chewing has been associated with alertness and some attention effects” rather than inventing a precise brain mechanism.
Caffeinated gum adds a separate caffeine effect
Caffeine has a much larger and more established evidence base for alertness and attention. A 2025 meta-analysis of randomized placebo-controlled trials found acute caffeine improved attention accuracy and reaction time in healthy adults.
So if a caffeinated gum helps you feel more alert, the effect cannot automatically be credited to chewing alone.
A useful 40mg caffeinated-gum study
In a double-blind placebo-controlled study with 118 young adults, Smith tested a caffeinated gum containing 40mg caffeine, placebo gum and no gum. Caffeinated gum was associated with better performance on sustained-attention tasks and more positive mood. Placebo gum also produced some mood effects, helping illustrate that chewing and caffeine can contribute differently.
