Pre-Workout Gum: What Sports Science Says About Caffeine Before Training

The short answer: pre-workout caffeine gum is a convenient way to take a measured caffeine amount shortly before training. The format is interesting because caffeine is released into saliva while chewing and can be absorbed rapidly. Sports research on caffeinated gum reports performance benefits in some outcomes, but results depend heavily on dose, timing, exercise type and the individual.

What is pre-workout gum?

“Pre-workout gum” usually refers to chewing gum containing caffeine that is used before exercise. Unlike a powdered pre-workout drink, the gum format does not require water or a shaker and can provide a clearly stated amount per piece.

The active stimulant is still caffeine. Gum does not create a different kind of caffeine; it changes the delivery format.

Why gum can be taken closer to training

What the latest meta-analysis says

The 2026 review by Varovic and Grgic found small positive pooled effects for:

  • dynamic muscular strength
  • isometric muscular strength
  • jump height overall

It did not find a statistically significant pooled benefit for muscular endurance. That is a more accurate picture than claiming caffeine gum improves every kind of exercise.

Earlier gum research also found benefits — with an important dose caveat

A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis of 14 studies found an overall positive effect of caffeinated gum, particularly in trained participants. In subgroup analyses, benefits were more apparent when gum was taken within 15 minutes of exercise and when caffeine doses were at least 3mg/kg.

That dose finding is important scientifically, but it is not a reason to multiply pieces of a consumer gum until you reach a sport-lab dose. For a 70kg adult, 3mg/kg is 210mg of caffeine. Research protocols can approach general single-dose or daily safety guidance and should not be copied without context.
